PASTEURISED LIQUID EGG: A hit in western Jamaica hotels
The age-old debatable question, 'which came first, the chicken or the egg?', is an ongoing pastime that's good mental exercise for avid 'debaters', often ending with no clear winner. But let's just focus on the eggs. There is no debate about when gone are the days of breaking eggs over hot steaming frying pans and the stocking up of egg shells in the busy kitchen areas of several hotels, thanks to the pasteurised liquid-egg product which has now become a fixture in hotels across western Jamaica. When requests are made, all the chef has to do is to reach for a bottle of the product, which is always at arm's length, and pour in the frying pan; and as we say here in Jamaica, 'as yuh quint' breakfast is complete and the guests gleefully sit down to enjoy their morning meal. Several chefs in the hotel sector across western Jamaica have found that preparations for breakfast have been made easier, less cumbersome and allow for shorter waiting periods by guests for their favourite omelette and other egg-ingredient breakfast.
Cleveland emerges as a dining hot spot
In his latest book, the world-famous food writer insists that everybody should be using veal stock in their home kitchen. He advises all meat eaters to slaughter and eat their kill once in their lives. And earlier this year, on his influential Web site ruhlman.com, he launched a withering attack on the unsuspecting chicken Caesar salad. So you might think that this dashing uber-foodie would make his home in a culinary capital such as New York, San Francisco or even Chicago, right? .
Garbage truck slams into Uptown house
Several muttered, "Thank God no one got hurt," and several more approached him with hugs and words of consolation. Lewis' truck and his wife's blue Chevy Cavalier both sustained damage when the garbage truck ran into the property. Lewis also said he probably lost furniture and several of his paintings as emerged from his living room's rubble, past the front of the garbage truck and onto a sidewalk littered with damaged cars. Three other cars sat damaged nearby, including neighbor Terrell Knott's black Chrysler 300. The hood on the passenger side was crumpled like a torn up aluminum can. "I'm just glad no one got hurt," said Knotts, who was parked two doors down. "It's a miracle." The house didn't collapse, but two of the four living room walls are substantially damaged.
Lenten menu is cast: Seafood on Fridays
Fish sticks. They've been around since the 1920s and for generations of Catholics, particularly in landlocked regions of the nation, the frozen food item will forever be linked to meatless Fridays. "My mother would make fish sticks during Lent, and I didn't really like them,'' said Charlene Connelly, owner of That Irish Shop in Valley Junction in West Des Moines, recalling her Catholic upbringing in South Dakota. Fish in every form takes on added importance for many Christian faiths from today - Ash Wednesday - through Easter, March 23. The first day of Lent, Ash Wednesday is one of two days - the other is Good Friday, March 21 - that Catholics are obliged to fast as well as not eat meat. .
