Because no one explores for uranium when you've got half a century's worth of it already found. The truth of the matter is uranium prospecting has barely begun, with most of the earth's surface not surveyed for uranium, and many low-yield mines shut down due to the 1980s plummet in uranium prices. The true amount of reserves we have are at least 15X higher. But for purposes of this calculation, lets just assume they're only 5X higher. That gives us 250 years. So where's the rest come from?Right now we burn uranium fuel once, then throw it away. In the 1970s we used to reprocess that fuel. Burned in a breeder reactor, it actually makes more fuel...a process that can be repeated up to 20 times. President Carter banned fuel reprocessing for proliferation concerns, and the industry has never recovered.

US must shake its Wild West attitude toward guns
In one bitter week, six dead in Kirkwood, MO and six in DeKalb, IL, an even dozen, from a fusillade of gunfire by two citizens armed and dangerous. This is not counting the other assorted incidents of victims killed by gun-toting citizens in our country last week alone.. I don't have the exact number of deaths due to weapons legally obtained by the perpetrators. No doubt, that illustrious defender of the faith, ranting their spurious, self-serving interpretation of the Constitution of our right to bear arms, the NRA, keeps this total on their spreadsheets at Washington, DC. headquarters. In this hail of bullets members of this "militia" power-mad lobbying throng must be chanting, " Hail to the NRA ". How many card-carrying members recited the Lords Prayer attending funerals of their slain friends? Against an individuals intent on killing scores of others indiscriminately, the evidence is overwhelming that there is scant defense from limiting the initial carnage by officers of the law or average citizens, unarmed or armed with openly displayed or concealed weapons for defense.

The world is running out of oil. Consumers are irked at forking over $3 for every gallon of gasoline. Oil and gas are not renewable, and most of the known crude is buried in blistering deserts of the Middle East or frozen tracts from Alaska to Siberia. For those reasons and more, 4,000 scientists, farm-state officials and others are energized as they meet this week at the Gaylord Palms Resort in Kissimmee, cooking up more plans for alternative fuels -- "bio-fuels" -- using everything from soybeans and crushed cotton seeds to corn and waste vegetable oil. All American grown. .
'It's a fiasco – but my nose isn't in the trough'
I earned more in the private sector than I ever earned in politics," she declared. She added: "You have to look the part as well, goddammit. I never had my hair highlighted in my life before. Whatever this is, it's not a gravy train."Alexander called for a less cynical style of politics, revealing that she considers Buddhist mantras before leading political attacks against opponents. "(Politics] is not the sort of world where the Buddhist mantra of, 'is it true, is it necessary, and is it kind', is very often applied to a political speech. But I do sometimes give thought before I speak to whether those tests have been applied," she said.Alexander said she did not .
Good Neighbor’s cupboard is bare in Anderson
ANDERSON Tuna fish, grits, canned pumpkin and cranberry sauce — that's about all that's left in the warehouse for the Good Neighbor Cupboard in Anderson. Now that the season of giving is over, the food pantry is looking at bare shelves and slim pickings for its 500-plus customers a month. What the cupboard needs is food. On Wednesday, a typical day for the cupboard, Mr. Berry said volunteers gave away 18 boxes of food. Over the course of 2007, the cupboard served more than 5,700 people, up from 4,737 in 2006. With more people to feed, the organization is feeling the crunch. “I think we've been kind of overshadowed by Anderson Interfaith Ministries and other high- profile food banks," he said. “We started in 1982, and for 20 years, we were the only food bank around." Open between 10:30 a.m.
Palestinian Aide Suggests Kosovo a Model
Under the internationally endorsed "road map" peace plan, which is the basis of the renewed negotiations with the Palestinians, Israel is to cease all settlement activity. Work is under way to link the mobile homes to utilities, even though there is no official approved blueprint for expanding Eli, Peace Now's settlement expert, Hagit Ofran, said. "The situation on the ground is deteriorating," Palestinian negotiator Saeb Erekat told a news conference Wednesday. He said Abbas and Olmert agreed Tuesday to begin working with a U.S. mediator in charge of investigating complaints about noncompliance with the road map. There was no immediate Israeli confirmation. Similar unauthorized settlement activity has taken place in Maskiot in the northern Jordan Valley.

Japan trade deficit widens in January as exports slow, amid concerns ...
Japan's trade deficit widened to 79.3 billion yen (US$734 million; euro501 million) in January from a year earlier, the government said Thursday, suggesting exports face a slowdown amid global uncertainties over U.S. subprime woes. The data showed the deficit jumped more than 20 times in January from last year's 3.5 billion yen (US$32 million; euro22 million). The results, announced by the Finance Ministry, marked the first deficit in a year and far worse than the 5.6 billion yen (US$52 million; euro35 million) deficit estimate by economists polled by Dow Jones and Nikkei. Japan's trade surplus with the U.S. declined 4.8 percent to 540.7 billion yen (US$5 billion; euro3.4 billion), marking the fifth straight month of decline, the ministry said. .
