Talking tuna and why sushi's not always a healthy choice

Scary lab tests showing high levels of mercury in a lot of the tuna that gets sliced into sushi in restaurants all over town makes you wonder about the safety of seafood. For help in deciding which fish to eat and which to toss back, take a look at the Environmental Defense Fund's easy to read Seafood Selector. Visit www.environmentaldefense.org.

One interesting point: not all tuna's laced with high mercury levels. Albacore tuna from the U.S. and British Columbia is one of the safer ones, though even it contains moderate levels of mercury. Kids over six and grownups can safely eat it four times a month, but kids under six should only eat it three times per month. Bluefin tuna, due to high levels of both mercury and PCBs, should not be eaten at all. Bigeye and yellowfin (also called ahi) frequently show up in sushi and are high in mercury.

Tax tip: The deductibility of home interest

I'm assuming you will be using this house as your primary personal residency and you can itemize deductions instead of using the standard deduction. To determine whether all of the interest is deductible, you will need to see exactly how the loan proceeds were used.

A home mortgage is any loan that is secured by your main home or second home. This would include first and second mortgages, refinanced mortgages, a line of credit and home equity loans.

A home includes a house, a condominium, a cooperative, a mobile home, a house trailer, a boat or a similar property that has sleeping, cooking and toilet facilities. You must be legally liable for the loan. You cannot deduct payments you make for someone else if you are not legally liable to make them.

The interest you pay on a mortgage on a home other than your main or second home may be deductible if the proceeds of the loan were used for business, investment or other deductible purposes.

The greenest chippy in town

Shocking news. The chef at Tom's Place, the 'green' fish-and-chip shop soon to be opened by the Michelin-starred chef, Tom Aikens, is French. This is worrying. The French, in my experience, don't really get batter. Tempura - the light stuff beloved of the Japanese - they understand. A zucchini flower kissed with flour, water and, at a push, egg: what's not to like? But British batter, crusty as old shoe leather, brown as syrup, and severely doused in malt vinegar? Non merci.

Do UFOs really exist?

The Ministry of Defence has for the first time opened its real-life 'X Files', detailing how its experts have examined photographs of UFOs hovering over the UK. While the images range from the baffling to the risible, there is no doubting the seriousness that officials reserve for the issue of extraterrestrial life. Correspondence between the MoD and members of the public who report sightings of strange objects reveals that Whitehall mandarins remain "totally open-minded" about the existence of UFOs. The letters - obtained by Scotland on Sunday through the Freedom of Information Act - confirm that the MoD has a procedure of scrambling fighter planes to confront any unidentified craft or object that enters UK airspace. However, there are hints that at least some strange objects seen in the sky are of a distinctly terrestrial provenance.

Obituary: Segovia proudly stood for civil rights, East Side

Each year, on the morning of one of the largest Martin Luther King Jr. marches in the country, Joe Segovia heard the famous four words of the slain civil rights leader's speech. It was as though the man himself sat upon Segovia's shoulder and whispered, "I have a dream."

Segovia's family isn't sure what it was, but something motivated the wheelchair-using senior to find a way to participate in all but one MLK march since its formation.

Segovia, 71, who died Thursday, had a dream, too — and lived it.

"When he was growing up, movie theaters were still segregated," his oldest son, Ruben Segovia, said. "He always told us about the racism and pain he endured growing up."

Segovia, one of 10 children, was the son of a homemaker and laborer.

RECIPE FINDER: Old Bay Hot Crab Meat

Jane Raley of Lutherville, Md., was looking for a recipe for a crab dip similar to the one she enjoyed so much that was served at the now-closed Jasper's restaurant in Pikesville, Md.. She says it was the best crab dip she had ever had.

Harriett Heyman of Baltimore found three different crab-dip recipes in her collection. She says she has made all three numerous times and would recommend any one of them.

I tested the one that sounded the most classic to me. It is a luscious concoction made with fresh lump crab meat and flavored primarily with Old Bay seasoning. If fresh crab meat is not available where you live, pasteurized could be substituted, but I would recommend adding a tablespoon or so of fresh lemon juice.

This dip is best served warm and paired with crackers, chips or raw vegetables.
