Denied permission to attend Sullivan Central Prom

My name is Tim Dougherty and I recently graduated from Sullivan Central High School. This year I was asked to attend prom at Sullivan Central, so I accepted. At Central the student has to get me "approved" to go, so I thought no big deal, I was not a huge trouble maker but, I did my share of trouble. Just the other day my date called me while I was on my way to work and told me I was denied, I couldn't believe it. My date had asked the assistant principal Kim Kirk the reason of my denial, she stated "former disciplinary actions". I thought to myself what could it have been. I thought the law was "Do the crime, do the time". I thought well I've done my time, there is no reason to be turned down. My mother went to the school and talked to assistant principal John K. Gibson, he was appaled and shocked.

Taming Hell's Kitchen

THE CHEF: Gordon Ramsay is the only chef in London to hold three Michelin stars, with his eponymous flagship restaurant in the city's affluent Chelsea neighborhood. His empire spans Japan, Dubai and the U.S., where he has three restaurants including at New York's London hotel, which was recently awarded two Michelin stars.

KNOWN FOR: Mr. Ramsay has made a name for himself serving up modern British-French cuisine. But the former professional soccer player has established a reputation among a much wider audience as a fiery-tempered, foul-mouthed chef through his reality cooking television shows. At home, however, he emphasizes the importance of social skills with his four children (who range in age from 6 to 9 years of age) by regularly sitting down with them to Sunday lunch. Mr. Ramsay, who grew up with the family-lunch tradition, sees it as an important ritual for his children to learn manners as well as discuss anything that has upset them.

The gluten-free phenomenon

Just when bread was starting to make a comeback after the low-carb craze, it has been hit with the gluten-free frenzy.

Hoards of people are giving up gluten, a protein found in wheat, barley and rye. Yet the growing numbers of gluten avoiders are not only people with celiac disease--which was once dismissed as a rare condition but is now estimated to affect 1 out of every 100 Americans.

Gluten has become the dietary villain du jour, the new "carb," if you will.

Tackle box hero: Precocious angler a teenage force at Fall Mack Days

It is not unusual for 14-year-old Stephen Naethe of Pablo to spend 10 to 12 hours alone on his pontoon kickboat on Flathead Lake, jigging the depths for mackinaw. Naethe has caught more than 500 macks during Fall Mack Days.

Transport ministry picks 17 as 'Welcome to Japan' ambassadors

A considerable part of the JT public does not think learning Japanese is necessary, even for long term residents... Oh, those evil Japanese! How dare they not learn English for us!

"Unless you speak Japanese you are not welcome to stay for longer than 90 days."

Yuo are invited to post here a list of countries that allow tourists to stay for unlimited periods.

"If you do decide to learn the lingo, then you will only find 20% of landlords willing to let their rabbit hutch to you in the Tokyo area."

Funny you should mention it. When I last moved here the first question from the landlords was always "Can you speak Japanese". Needless to say I had no problems finding a place to live here. Should I again mention the discussion we had earlier this week here about long term residents and learning Japanese, or will you connect the dots by yourself?

"Observe the gomi on the beaches and other beauty spots - including Mt Fuji."

Well, at least one point where we can agree.

Cooking Light names cities that best fit its philosophy

To celebrate our 20th year of publication, Cooking Light wanted to know what places best fit our philosophy to eat smart, be fit, and live well. Using statistics from such organizations as the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, the U.S. Department of Agriculture, and the Zagat Survey, we ranked major metropolitan areas on 15 criteria. The result, we think, is a ranking of U.S. cities that best provide the resources people need to live healthful lives.

Book helps spice up cooking

The art of seasoning is simple if you think of adding herbs and spices as an opportunity to get acquainted with their flavors. A sprinkle or a pinch of a particular seasoning can completely change a dish. Just think how a change in spices can transform a pound of hamburger; chili powder, cumin, garlic, oregano and thyme with some tomato sauce result in something quite different when the chili and cumin are left out. You have a dramatic change from the base for chili to Italian spaghetti sauce. .

Aretha's lightening up

Slim-Fast? No. Jenny Craig? Partly. It was mostly physical training. Detroit Queen of Soul Aretha Franklin will be honored Friday as Person of the Year for MusiCares, a Recording Academy charity supporting music education. She's also up for her 18th Grammy on Sunday, nominated for best gospel performance for a duet with Mary J. Blige. (Blige's "Growing Pains" album is No. 1 on this week's Detroit Nielsen SoundScan sales chart.) Franklin's physical appearance is also making news. She looked slimmer for an Associated Press interview in a lavender sweater and dark pants. "I've got a new trainer, and she's giving me a lot of good things, really educating me about nutrition and weight loss and how to do it, and cooking stuff for you," the 65-year-old singer said. "I'm not on a diet. It's a lifestyle change.
