How To Really Talk To Your Therapist: Four Collaborative Steps

You might even feel afraid of asking questions or discussing concerns about your therapy.

Remember that therapists are human beings and have the same flaws as the rest of us. Therapy is a subjective process, and the therapist can only give his or her own subjectively colored opinion, which has been shaped by his training and life experiences. That viewpoint may not always be the right one for you.

As the "consumer" in the therapy partnership, it's your responsibility to look after your best interests and to be an active participant in your therapy. If something isn't working, it's up to you to talk about it with your therapist. The message is clear: Take your therapist off the pedestal and take ownership of your therapy.

Plan out what to say in advance

As an active partner in your own therapy, you may need to express concerns, ask questions, or even give your therapist negative feedback about how you believe the therapy is going.

Update: Library Has 10 Copies of "Water for Elephants"

DFO: Mayor Sandi Bloem and the chamber made a good call. There's no reason for a parade entry to spoil this celebration b/c a coupla middle-agers want to shoot off their own version of fireworks along the route.

Question: Do you support the chamber's decision to allow the Patton command vehicle replica but not the noise from the 50-calibre gun?

Armstrong's Live Well program joining Wellness Community

They like to call themselves "the best-kept secret in Central Jersey." But now that the Lance Armstrong Foundation has found them, that doesn't figure to last much longer.

The Wellness Community of Central New Jersey has been there to support cancer patients and survivors since 2004, when the concept first emerged from Eunice Jadlocki's living room to temporary quarters at the Van Horne house in Somerville -- and then to its permanent location at 3 Crossroads Drive in Bedminster in 2005.

Since 2004, more than 600 participants have taken advantage of the community's support groups and individualized programs. These include not only those stricken with cancer, but caregivers and family members, too.

Now, the nonprofit agency, which is supported entirely by donations, has been selected for the Live Well program funded by the Lance Armstrong Foundation.

A Month In Records: January 2007

But all this talk of evolving into a race of webbed-limbed freaks is totally off the subject at hand, which is January's finest long-play releases. Yes, despite the mood of the nation following Christmas, one of greyness and gloom, many a great album hit stores online and high-street alike in the year's first month.

Here are our pick of the bunch. Listen to them, for they are far from as bad as awaking one morning to find the canals of Amsterdam have risen to flood the Sex Museum. Nobody wants that.

And please, no 'where's Jamie T?', 'cause it's here

Said DiS of the much-hyped debut album from London's Klaxons: Myths Of The Near Future isn't a rave record. It was never supposed to be.

Tiny tater treasures: Chefs take humble tot to the next level

Sheila Devaney of Chapel Hill, N.C., says the vegetarian Tater Tot casserole she learned to make while living in Georgia "is always the first thing gone when you bring it to a potluck at work. But if there's any left, it's even better the next day for breakfast."

Not content with casseroles, a growing subculture of home cooks has begun shredding potatoes and hand-forming their own tots.

Devaney considers such efforts ridiculous, if not anathema to the essential appeal of Tater Tots: their ubiquity.

"Why would you ever make your own?" she gasps in disbelief. "Just go to our friends at Ore-Ida. They can hook you up!

Try mixing, customizing your exercise choices

The answers to these questions are false and false. Both questions highlight popular misconceptions of people in this country today.

The truth is that exercise need not be strenuous in order for you to derive health benefits. On the other hand, only doing very easy activities may not keep you fit enough to prevent weight gain and chronic illness. Insufficient exercise has been linked to heart disease, stroke, high blood pressure, diabetes, osteoporosis, obesity, colon cancer, breast cancer, anxiety and depression.

No doubt about it, activity and health are definitely linked. Yet, less than half of Americans get the minimum recommended amount of physical activity. And a quarter of U.S. adults participate in no leisure-time exercise at all.

So the real questions are: What types of exercise, at what levels, are required to promote and maintain your health?

Updated guidelines

Based on research evidence that has come to light, the American College of Sports Medicine and the American Heart Association released more explicit exercise guidelines last year.
